The BuFI report presents the current goals and priorities of the research and innovation policy of the Federal Government and the Länder for the current reporting period and provides information on specific activities, funding programmes and initiatives. Underpinned with facts and figures, the BuFI report provides an overview of R&D expenditure, personnel and results and of how Germany compares internationally.

The report presents the various elements and actors in the German research and innovation system. It is supplemented by a database of those organisations and institutions that carry out research and development outside of industry and universities. These include non-university research institutions, federal and state research institutions, and R&D funding institutions and academies.
